View of the river down which
the Wumps were journeying
The Chief got news of the Wumps problems in the river Thames. At the locks,
he managed to go down and see for himself what was happening.
He was amazed at what he saw, the river was flowing very fast and there were lots of boats sailing past. Suddenly, he saw the two Wumps, who, with great difficulty, had managed to get onto a log that was floating past.
They felt much safer and started to enjoy the
journey, one of the Wumps was a great reader
and said this is just like Three Men in a Boat in
reverse all we need is another Wump and a dog .
The weather was very good at this time, this
did have its down side, lots of boats were on the
river, making it very dangerous.
This magical journey took them on towards
Abingdon past Sandford. They did think
about stopping at the Trout Inn for lunch, but the flow of the river made it
impossible to get to the bank. The two Wumps had by now got very skilled
at holding onto the log and so started to really enjoy this most amazing
trip. They started to discuss what they would like to do and see on their travels.
The first place they talked about was Whittenham Clumps, but they decided
that this was too much of a struggle for a couple of Wumps. They floated
past Shillingford and on towards Wallingford then Streatley & Goring.
It was here they decided to give the landlord of the Swan Inn a shock and call
in for lunch. What food do you give Wumps?
They decided to eat a small portion of Dover sole and new potatoes.
Both Wumps returned to their log where they soon fell asleep.
Unbeknown to the Wumps, someone had let the log back into the fast flow of
the river, they suddenly awoke, surprised to find themselves stuck on the bank
by Beale park near Pangbourne. They then decided to visit this lovely park
for the rest of the day, returning only when it was getting dark to spend the night
back on their log.
