The Wumps had a very difficult time in the river Cherwell but they seemed to have avoided the childrens fishing nets so they could carry on with their adventures. They could spend hours watching funny humans dangling bits of nylon cord from rods, they found this very amusing and would try to bang into the nylon lines, when they did, they suddenly found the line lifted out of the river so the humans could look at them, most odd. It was after a very stormy, rainy time, the Wumps found themselves floating out of the river and into funny areas. We now know that these were flooded built up areas and roads making the Wumps feel very frightened. Weird large things were rushing through the water making lots of waves. Humans were walking slowly through the water and kept very clear of these things, for fear of getting knocked off their feet. I do believe the large objects were motor cars and lorries ploughing through floods. After floating through extremely dangerous water, the Wumps found themselves back in the River Cherwell and due to the heavy rain that had been falling, the speed of their travel was very fast indeed. They swept past Clifton, Somerton, Lower Heyford, went through the Bletchington wides where the river and the canal meet and onwards to Oxford, never in the history of the Wumps race has a Wump travelled such a great distance, as far as we know. They soon came to the place where the River Cherwell meets the River Thames dodging boats of all shapes and sizes, but, their most frightening time was just ahead - a very large Lock. The Wumps knew that they could only hope and pray that they would get through this part of their journey. All of this time, the Chief Wump had not heard from them to find out what happened, but you will see more adventures on the next page.
