Where?
WUMP ADVENTURES
Two wumps, one called Boris, the other Charlie, found their way into the Hook Norton brewery well, they avoided being sucked into the beer making pumps where they would have become very drunk. They may have enjoyed it, but I don't think it would have been good for them. Missing the hooves of the shire horses that pull the brewery dray, they found their way into a small stream that runs through the village. They were lucky to avoid wild mink and water voles. At the bottom of a garden, they saw a large, fierce animal looking at them, it was a large black and white cat, with two large eyes staring at them.
The cat pawed the water and they floated clear, the relief was plain to see, even on a wumps face. On their travels, they heard woodpeckers, saw kingfishers diving into the water after fish and crows nesting in the tall trees lining the bank.
In cottage gardens they saw ducks
and chickens and heard pigs grunting in a sty.
In the Pear Tree pub garden, people were drinking
Hooky ale, sitting under thr trees and eating rather
nice sandwiches. But the Wumps could not stay.
Their journey took them out of the village and through the lovely Oxfordshire countryside, seeing wondrous things. They travelled through some beautiful Oxfordshire villages, such as Wigginton and as far as Banbury, where they found themselves in the river Cherwell. Life was very hazardous here, fish, especially pike were big enough to eat them whole, but the wumps were too quick for them.
Both Wumps stared back with two small eyes, they clung together with great difficulty.
