Country Wumps
HISTORY
These loveable little creatures are only to be found in the village of Hook Norton in Oxfordshire, a few miles from the City of Oxford, a lovely University city and Stratford upon Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare.
They are believed to originate from lumps of tree root found at the bottom of old, deep wells, you must have heard of
Wumps of Wood. They only have one eye because there is not a lot to see down a well. Their flat bottoms are caused by them trying to climb up the well walls and sliding back down again. The Happy Wumps have musical notes coming out of their mouths. Stroking them is thought to have a calming effect on whoever strokes them.
The Chief Wump has a very good friend who is a White Witch and she assures him that this is so.
The pictures below shows the well where they were originally found and where they live now, when they are resting from their adventures. It is a fairy house in the
Chief Wumps' garden.
